SPRA Fitness Leadership Certification gives Fitness Leaders national recognition through the National Fitness Leadership Alliance (NFLA) and the qualifications and recognition to instruct across Canada.

4 Steps to Certification

Step 1: Complete Exercise Theory Course

Time: 24 Hours

Prerequisite: Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. 

Exercise Theory is a prerequisite to all specialty exercise modules. 

There are three ways Exercise Theory can be completed:

  1. Complete Exercise Theory with an SPRA Course Conductor, and write the NFLA Exercise Theory Exam
  2. Complete the Home Study Program, then write the NFLA Exercise Theory Exam 
  3. Challenge the NFLA Exercise Theory Exam 

In order to complete Exercise Theory you must pass the NFLA Exercise Theory Exam with a grade of 80% or higher.

Step 2: Choose a Certification Path

 Within 6 months of passing the NFLA Exercise Theory Exam, you must choose a certification from one of three modules:

Group Exercise

 

Aquatic Exercise

 

Exercise for Older Adults

Step 3: Complete CPR and First Aid Training

All applicants must provide proof of CPR/First Aid Training. 

CPR/First Aid Certificates must be current:

  • CPR is valid for one year
  • First Aid is valid for two or three years depending on the service provider.  

Step 4: Submit All Documents to SPRA

Once you have completed all the previous steps, you must send the following to SPRA: 


To Renew Your Certification

To renew Certification as an SPRA Fitness Leader, you must provide:

  • Proof of 12 Continuing Education Credits every two years
  • Proof of 20 practical teaching hours every year
  • Annual Certification Fee payable to SPRA
  • CPRA/FA certificates must be current
