In the fall of 2008, the Saskatoon Public School Division partnered with the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) to create and implement Locally Developed Courses of Study for Youth Fitness Leadership, in accordance to the Saskatchewan Education Policy and Procedures for Locally Developed Courses of Study. This included the Active Living and Fitness Leadership 20 (based on the SPRA Fitness Theory Module) and the Active Living and Fitness Leadership 30 (based on the SPRA Group Exercise Module).
The target group for this course is any Grade 11 and 12 students who are interested in fitness and an alternate physical education class or for those students who have taken the grade 11 and 12 credit classes and want another opportunity and challenge to gain an additional credit while remaining active.
The focus is on individual health and wellness and to promote and encourage healthy, active lifestyles for a lifetime. Benefits to the students include the opportunity for additional credits outside of PE 20 and 30 and the opportunity to become certified as Fitness Leaders within the community.
As a result of the Saskatoon pilot project, locally developed courses of study exist for Youth Fitness Leadership in the province. There is a model that can be used by other schools. Key learning’s and resources can be utilized by others to adopt the courses within their school divisions. It provides the opportunity to teach the benefits of a healthy active lifestyle to students who are future leaders.
