POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Childcare Programs Supervisor, this position is responsible for delivering a daily recreation program for children of varying ages. This position will also ensure that children are engaged in a pro-social manner and participate in activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate for the age group. This position works closely with other camp and municipal staff, community organizations, children, and their families.

WORK RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead a group of 10 children aged 5 to 12 years
  • Ensure a safe and well-supervised learning environment
  • Follow policies and procedures as outlined in the staff manual in all decision making and public relations
  • Establish positive relationships and work cooperatively with staff and participants in maintaining a high level of morale and ensuring clear communications
  • Attend all mandatory staff functions: training, scheduled meetings, and allocated program times
  • Report all minor and major accidents, problems, and disturbances ensuring appropriate forms and filled out accurately and completely
  • Assist with the implementation of the Discovery Camp program which includes themes of community connection, mental health/fitness, nature/environment, challenge/self-image, and local field trips
  • Relay feedback to the Childcare Programs Supervisor or Childcare Programs Coordinator for caregivers
  • Responsible for management of daily ratios, implementation of programming, and communication regarding challenges
  • Undertake other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • Early Childhood Educator Level 1 required
  • Experience working with children in a camp environment is preferred
  • Working knowledge of computers and systems
  • Valid First Aid and CPR level C Certificate
  • Safe Food Handling Certificate preferred
  • Satisfactory background screening is required for this position including a Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child Welfare Check
  • A Class 5 Driver’s License with a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract

  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Communicate professionally and diplomatically with children
  • Knowledge of legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures for program development involving children
  • Provide a service-oriented focus with staff, volunteers, agencies (local and provincial), customers, and the public
  • Flexibly and creatively adopt new ways of doing things
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work independently
  • Able to work as a reliable team member
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality in all interactions

WORKING CONDITIONS

Hours
Able to work flexible shifts including mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends as required.
Physical Effort
Providing childcare activities. Energetic, interactive labour provision with varying levels of physical effort, including moderate lifting (up to 10 kg), sitting, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, reaching, driving, carrying.
Travel
Some travel to field sites within and outside the Town under various road and weather conditions. Must maintain alertness and respond appropriately using defensive driving skills in various conditions (traffic, weather, distractions).
Work Environment
Performance of duties entails program coordination for youth in public spaces, indoors and outdoors (seasonally), and field trips offsite. Significant exposure to the public in a service provision capacity. Limited to moderate exposure to office environments. Potential exposure to biohazards.
