We are saddened by the loss of a passionate leader and recreation advocate, Darrell Lessmeister. As President of the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) from 2009 to 2013, Darrell led the organization with integrity and a deep commitment to enhance the recreation delivery system in the province. His belief in the value and impact of the system extended to all providers, and he readily made himself available to support any community in the province.
Darrell’s inclusive leadership approach ensured that everyone’s perspective was sought out, heard, and valued, with a focus not on personal gain but on what was best for the organization and the industry. Bringing expertise from his role as Director of Leisure Services for the City of Humboldt, he guided SPRA’s involvement in the amalgamation of the Zone Sport Councils and Regional Recreation Associations into what are now known as the Sport, Culture and Recreation Districts.
With a core belief in knowledge sharing and community development, Darrell was the catalyst for SPRA’s Spring Symposium returning to the Humboldt Uniplex year after year. This event continues in the recreation spaces he managed and enhanced in Humboldt, and the site has been the learning space for hundreds of Saskatchewan facility, park, and recreation practitioners, providing a place to network, learn, and refine their skills.
Darrell was also an active contributor to the SPRA Parks and Land Use Committee, supporting the growth of services for parks volunteers and practitioners. This commitment extended to both his engagement and promotion of Communities in Bloom at local, provincial and national levels.
His quiet but powerful leadership, mentorship, sense of humor, and love for his family will be remembered fondly. We share our deepest condolences to Darrell’s family, friends, and recreation colleagues from across Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia.
