HIGH FIVE® is a quality assurance training standard that provides recreation program staff and supervisors with the knowledge and skills to implement quality and developmentally appropriate programming to children ages 6-12.
Through HIGH FIVE® training courses, front line recreation, sport and after school leaders learn how to incorporate the Principles of Healthy Child Development into their everyday programming. The following HIGH FIVE® Principles emphasize the social, emotional and cognitive needs of children to help front line leaders engage participants, build relationships and resolve conflict:
1. A Caring Adult 2. Friends 3. Play 4. Mastery 5. Participation
Each of these Principles plays a part in providing children with quality recreation experiences. The programming that youth ages 6-12 experience has a direct link to their participation level in recreation and physical activity programs in the future. Positive interactions fostered by the HIGH FIVE® Principles help to ensure that all youth grow to be involved in lifelong recreation activities.
HIGH FIVE® Training Workshops
SPRA primarily offers two HIGH FIVE® Workshops – Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) and QUEST.
Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) This one-day workshop provides front-line leaders with skills to improve the quality of their youth programs. It provides in-depth training in the Principles of Healthy Childhood Development in order that front-line leaders understand how to ensure that each child’s social, emotional and cognitive needs are met. Leaders learn activities and gain knowledge, tips and resources to enhance their programs, as well as their relationships with children and other staff members.
The leaders are provided with an extensive overview of each of the HIGH FIVE® Principles as well as provided teachings on how to incorporate a conflict resolution model, decrease bullying within programs and plan activities and programs to encourage the HIGH FIVE® guidelines.
HIGH FIVE® Healthy Minds for Healthy Children HIGH FIVE® National recently released an additional training opportunity that teaches engagement strategies for nurturing resiliency in children. It also provides insight into common mental health distress or disorders that children could be experiencing. This is an online training initiative that will be made available to all participants of HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Childhood Development and HIGH FIVE® Sport Courses.
QUEST This one-day workshop will help supervisors improve the quality of their children’s programs by learning how to measure it with the HIGH FIVE® Quality Experience Scanning Tools. This workshop provides practical training on the use of the QUEST Evaluation Tools to evaluate current children’s recreation programs.
At the completion of this workshop, learners will be able to define HIGH FIVE® and apply the Principles of Healthy Child Development, use the QUEST quality measurement tools for observing and evaluating children’s experiences in programs and acknowledge the crucial role of supervisors in setting the tone for healthy child development in an organization
Further information on the PHCD and QUEST courses may be found within the HIGH FIVE® Program Outline.
