The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) is piloting the first Indigenous Fitness Leadership Certification program in Saskatchewan over three weekends in Spring 2018.
From April 13-15, 27-29, and May 11-13, 2018, the program will train indigenous people committed to an active lifestyle who want to learn how to motivate and energize others in their community. Participants who complete the program will receive certification recognized by the National Fitness Leadership Alliance (NFLA), enabling employment in the fitness industry.
The Indigenous Fitness Leadership Certification program was designed by an experienced team of educators and fitness professionals to empower Indigenous people to deliver safe, high quality fitness programs in their communities that are culturally relevant and incorporate traditional learning methods.
This is a great opportunity. This SPRA project will benefit us as Indigenous People in two main areas: building our human capacity and promoting health and fitness.
-Chief John McNab, George Gordon First Nation
The development and delivery of an Indigenous Fitness Leadership Certification program is an exciting opportunity for Indigenous people. More Indigenous people supporting our community members to be physically active, and potentially more engaged in sport, can only be seen as positive step in the right direction.
-Joe Daniels, Aboriginal Coaching Module NCCP Facilitator
This pilot program is made possible through a funding agreement with the Department of Indigenous Services Canada, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch. The program supports the 89th Call to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, ensuring that barriers to participation in physical activity and fitness are reduced, and fitness programs are inclusive of Indigenous Peoples.
The application period is now closed. Upon completion and evaluation of the pilot project, there may be potential for the Indigenous Fitness Leadership Certification program to be available in the future through partnerships with communities and organizations.
