May 8, 2023 – The Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA) is once again partnering with the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) and the Saskatchewan Regional Parks Association (SRPA) to offer free regional park passes this summer.
Starting from May 18 to Sept. 15, 2023, people with a valid library card can borrow a pass from any Saskatchewan library and enjoy a seven-day loan period with free access to nearly 100 regional parks across the province. Last year’s pilot project led to the distribution of 800 passes, which circulated over 5,500 times, but only to participating library branches. This year, 1200 passes will be available for distribution to all regional library branches, libraries in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, and university libraries in Saskatoon and Regina.
“We are thrilled to once again join forces with our partners and expand this year’s program to provide even more access to the many benefits of connecting to nature," said SPRA President Jody Boulet.
The program is a natural fit for the SLA, which has a long-standing reputation for providing recreational programming that enhances the quality of life for Saskatchewan residents.
"This partnership is an amazing opportunity for libraries to further serve communities. It's another benefit of having a Saskatchewan library card!” said SLA President Amy Rankin.
Saskatchewan’s regional parks provide a range of recreational opportunities for residents, from scenic hikes and lakes to secluded camping spots and world-class golf courses. The program aims to reduce barriers to participation and inspire people to connect with nature.
“This program helps SRPA fulfill its mission to provide exceptional and accessible recreational opportunities,” said Katrina Irving, SRPA Executive Director. “We are excited to welcome more people to Saskatchewan’s unique regional parks.”
Passes must be borrowed in person and are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Library customers are encouraged to contact their local branch to ensure availability.
