On April 10, 2018, the Government of Saskatchewan issued the 2018-2019 Provincial Budget, “On Track – Provincial Budget 2018-19”.  The highlights below are of interest to the parks and recreation sector:

  • $4.5 million increase in capital funding to improve and upgrade Saskatchewan’s provincial parks
  • Funding to urban and regional parks remains consistent with 2017-2018 allocations
  • $241.1 million for municipal revenue sharing funding for urban, rural and northern municipalities
  • Investments in municipal infrastructure programs such as:
    • $83.2 million under the New Building Canada Fund
    • $63.5 in flow through municipal infrastructure funding provided by the Gas Tax Program

The Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport Plan for 2018-19 was also released. The Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport will continue to fund and support its partners and stakeholders in promoting the positive benefits of recreation, sport, heritage, arts and culture in Saskatchewan. Key actions outlined in their plan include:

  • Supporting community investments through the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund and the Community Initiatives Fund
  • Continuing partnerships to reduce barriers to participation in sport, culture and recreation
  • Creating natural and safe public spaces within core areas of provincial parks
  • Partnering with SPRA to co-host a national gathering on the Framework for Recreation in Canada, in the City of Regina on May 8-10, 2018
