Continuing Education Credits

The SPRA Fitness Division sponsors a variety of courses offered by outside agencies. These courses provide knowledge and instructional techniques to keep SPRA fitness leaders up to date with trends and information relevant to the Fitness Industry in Canada. The courses posted below are approved by the SPRA Fitness Division for Continuing Education Credits (CECs) towards your recertification.

All SPRA Fitness Leaders must submit 12 CECs every 2 years as part of the re-certification process.

Individuals must complete a CEC Application Form in order to receive credits from SPRA for items listed below, with the exception of the annual SaskFit Conference or courses that have been assigned CECs below.


Applying for CECs

If you have attended a course not listed below and would like to know if it qualifies for CECs please fill out the CEC Application for Fitness Leaders Form.  Please remember that the SPRA Fitness Division does require proof of attendance on all courses put forward as CECs for recertification purposes.

If you are a course instructor and would like to know how many CECs your course is worth and have it posted here, please fill out the CEC Application for Instructors Form. Please return all forms to the SPRA office with the requested accompanying materials.

Fitness Yoga Teacher Training

Yoga Teacher Training: Level 1 Basic Asanas

This 18 hour weekend workshop will provide the knowledge and methods to design and teach effective and safe basic yoga classes in various environments and venues. Students will receive a pose manual and learn correct physical execution of over 40 basic yoga postures, with training and practice in teaching language, cueing, sequencing, transitions, modifications and breathing. Discussion will include basic yoga history, philosophy, styles of yoga, teaching styles, basic yoga anatomy and safety. The training will include a short homework assignment, practice teaching, and individual coaching. Participants will receive certification upon completion of workshop and practice teaching requirement.

Yoga Teacher Training: Level 2 Teaching Intermediate Asanas

Prerequisite: Level 1 Basic Asanas Workshop
Requirements for Certification: 4 documented hours teaching yoga

This 18 hour weekend workshop will provide training in:

  • Over 30 intermediate level poses.
  • Methods to develop varied, interesting and inspiring intermediate and multi-level yoga classes for a variety of venues.
  • Breathing techniques to incorporate for advanced focus, awareness and increased challenge in the poses.
  • Further development of individual teaching and communication skills.
  • Safe hands-on adjustments.
  • Introduction to the paths of yoga philosophy and their application when teaching.

Yoga Teacher Certification: Teaching to Specific Groups

CEC's: 12
Prerequisite: Level 1 Basic Asanas Workshop

This 18 hour weekend workshop will focus on who and why we teach. Teachers will receive specialized training in teaching to specific groups of participants, including Yoga for Seniors, Chair-Assisted Yoga, Yoga for Seniors, Power, Fitness and Sport-specific Yoga (Yoga for Runners, Golfers and Hockey Players), and considerations in teaching Yoga for Children. The training will cover anatomical, physiological and psychological considerations. We will learn how to develop and deliver effective, beneficial and adaptive classes for these groups of participants.

Yoga Teacher Training: Teaching Advanced Asanas

Prerequisite: Teaching Intermediate Asanas
CEC'S: 12

Description: This 18 hour weekend workshop will provide breakdown, study and mindful practice of technique, variations, modifications, and teaching methodology of advanced asanas. We will also study, discuss and practice: Sanskrit terminolgoy, pranayama, bhandas, mudras, continuing philosophy and beginning meditation.

Prenatal Yoga Teacher Certification Level 1

Date: March 25-27, 2012 and June 15-17, 2012
Fee: $500.00
Prerequisite: Teaching Basic Asanas or equivalent

This two weekend training will prepare and certify you to teach safe, beneficial prenatal yoga classes. We will learn and practice the specific benefits of a prenatal yoga practice, study prenatal anatomy relating to yoga asanas, variations and modifications for each trimester, contraindications, breathing and meditation techniques, language and cueing changes, specific precautions and conditions. We will examine the role of the Prenatal Yoga Teacher and prepare you with information and resources for our prenatal yoga participants.

Yoga/Pilates Core Fusion
